Mandatory units
To achieve the qualification, learners must complete all 5 mandatory units.

- Keep the work area clean, safe and free from obstructions.
- Report unsafe conditions, incidents, near misses and damaged equipment.

- Follow work instructions, site procedures and supervisor directions.
- Plan and organise work activities within your responsibilities.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, team members and other trades.
- Work cooperatively without disrupting other site activities.
- Use time, tools, materials and equipment efficiently.
- Maintain the required quality of work and correct mistakes promptly.
- Adapt appropriately to changing site conditions or work priorities.

- Check the work area and identify necessary safety controls.
- Install barriers, cones, warning signs and exclusion zones.
- Set up protection for workers, pedestrians, vehicles and the public.
- Use suitable safety equipment according to site procedures.
- Inspect and maintain protection measures throughout the work.
- Keep emergency access routes, walkways and work routes clear.
- Coordinate safety arrangements with other trades and site operations.
- Remove signs, barriers and protection equipment safely after completion.
- Leave the area secure, tidy and safe for the next activity.
- Identify safe handling methods for waste, materials, tools and equipment.
- Use correct manual-handling techniques.
- Select and use suitable handling equipment where required.
- Prevent injuries from lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling or repetitive work.
- Store resources safely to prevent damage, collapse, spills or obstruction.
- Keep waste in designated storage, skip or collection areas.
- Segregate materials and waste where required for recycling or disposal.
- Report damaged equipment, unsafe loads and unsuitable storage conditions.
- Identify non-hazardous construction waste correctly.
- Follow site waste-management plans and environmental procedures.
- Segregate waste for reuse, recycling, recovery or disposal.
- Remove waste safely without creating risks to people, property or the environment.
- Use suitable tools, containers, skips and handling equipment.
- Control dust, loose debris, noise and other environmental impacts.
- Keep walkways, access routes, emergency exits and drainage areas clear.
- Check that skips and containers are suitable, correctly located and not overfilled.
- Maintain good housekeeping during and after waste-removal activities.
- Report suspected hazardous materials, contaminated waste, spillages or unsafe conditions immediately.
- Complete required workplace records and follow supervisor instructions.
Assessment method
This is not a classroom-only qualification. Evidence must be collected from actual workplace activities and cannot be simulated. Assessment normally includes workplace observation, professional discussion, photographs, witness testimony, work documents and a portfolio of evidence.
Career progression
After completion, learners may progress to higher-level construction qualifications or move towards supervisory roles. The qualification may also support an application for the CSCS Blue Skilled Worker card where the applicable CSCS requirements are met.
